1966-67 O-Pee-Chee (Topps)
The 1966-67 O-Pee-Chee hockey card set (also known as 1966-67 Topps) was sold in two separate series, with 66 different cards in each series (132 total cards). Picture cards were sold in five-cent packs, with a stick of O-Pee-Chee bubble gum included in every pack. The cards were “made and distributed in Canada by O-Pee-Chee Co. Ltd., London, Ontario / under license with Topps Chewing Gum Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y.”
Players and staff from all six National Hockey League teams were included in the 1966-67 O-Pee-Chee hockey series. There are 115 different hockey persons included in the series, 38 of which are today honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Collectors identify 11 rookie cards in the 1966-67 O-Pee-Chee hockey series (nine in the 1st Series and two in the 2nd Series). The rookie card list includes Hockey Hall of Fame honoured members #21 Emile Francis, #31 Harry Sinden and #35 Bobby Orr.
The 1966-67 O-Pee-Chee hockey card design mimics a wood grain television frame, the same design used in the 1966 Topps football card series (American Football League). The use of this design coincided with the advent of colour television in Canada, which in 1966-67 included the first colour season of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada.
