Yakupov selected first overall by Oilers

NHLThe Edmonton Oilers have made Nail Yakupov the first overall selection in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The selection was made on Friday June 22 at the draft in Pittsburgh, PA. It marks the third year in a row that the Oilers have drafted first overall.

“He’s pretty hungry to score goals,” said Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini. “I think he is a good fit for the guys we have.”

In 2011, the Oilers selected Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with the first-overall pick. Nugent-Hopkins was in attendance at the draft on Friday night in Pittsburgh. In 2010, the Oilers selected Taylor Hall with the first-overall pick.

Yakupov is a Russian-born right winger who has spent the last two seasons with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario League. He has the potential to make the Oilers NHL team this October for the 2012-13 season.
