NHLHockey collectors will want to take note of the new 2012 SP Authentic golf trading card set that will hit the marketplace in July 2012. The latest Upper Deck Company preview has showcased hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as one of the subjects in a special “Parade of Stars” subset. The card features the Great Gretzky swinging a golf club instead of a hockey stick.

“We made the decision to include other athletes who love the game of golf in an insert series called Parade of Stars,” wrote Chris Carlin of the Upper Deck Company. While Carlin did not want to “spoil all the surprises,” images confirmed that there will be both unsigned (pictured) and signed Parade of Stars cards. Along with the image of an unsigned Gretzky card, UDC also featured an image of a Parade of Stars signed card: Drew Brees of football fame.

Collectors can also expect to find basketball legend Michael Jordan in the subset, too. Jordan has be previewed on a Jordan-Tiger Woods Sign of Times dual autograph card.

This marks the sixth year for SP Authentic golf, albeit the first since 2005. The set is expected to feature some of the biggest names from professional golf. The series will be sold in four-card packs, with 20 packs per hobby box. Every box will deliver an average of three signature cards.

Golf-swinging hockey players have been featured on trading cards in the past, most notably a series of 100 players in the 2002-03 Signature Series “Golf” card insert set (unsigned). One of the oldest “golf” hockey cards featured Mike Ricci in the 1992-93 Stadium Club set. Previous SP Authentic golf sets (2001 to 2005), however, did not feature any athletes from other sports like hockey.
