Upper Deck celebrates Team Canada with hockey cards

NHLAbout a month before Steve Yzerman announced his Team Canada for the Sochi 2014 Olympics, collectors were given the opportunity to build their own squad via the 2013-14 Upper Deck Team Canada hockey card series. The product features a mix of stars from the past, present and future of Hockey Canada’s national program.

The hockey card series is sold in five-card packs, with 24 packs in every box. Every card in the series features a player wearing the Team Canada colours, from legends like Yzerman (Canada’s general manager for Sochi 2014), Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr to current stars like Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby.

A typical box delivers two autographed cards, eight or more basic inserts, one or more parallel cards, and both regular and short-printed cards from the base series. Those short prints, seeded one per pack, make up more than one third of the base set (100 short prints in a 260-card base set).

As for the autograph series, there are about 200 Team Canada players featured in the Team Canada Signatures insert set. Additional autographs are featured in Program of Excellence Signatures (numbered to 175 or 75) and base parallel Signature Black inserts (scarce, limited to 5 copies each).

Upper Deck Team Canada hockey cards were released in early December 2013.

Said Upper Deck president Jason Masherah in August 2013, “we have enjoyed a great relationship with Hockey Canada and are very happy to bring Canadian hockey fans collectibles and trading cards featuring players from their beloved national team. Fans can expect Upper Deck to branch out by creating some compelling trading card releases for Hockey Canada in the future, while continuing to deliver meaningful content to existing hockey and multi-sport products.”
