NHLAccording to the 2013 edition of The Hockey News Future Watch, Sven Bartschi is the top-ranked rookie card in this year’s 2012-13 hockey card sets. Bartschi was rated 15th overall in the annual top-50 hockey prospects list.

The Hockey News has published its Future Watch list for nearly 20 years. Blues rookie Vladimir Tarasenko was top on the list followed by Oilers’ defenceman Justin Schultz and Capitals’ prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov. As a result of a late start to this year’s NHL season, The Hockey News “decided to include (some) NHL rookies as Future Watch prospects because it wasn’t clear which ones were going to make the big league for good during this lockout-delayed/shortened season.”

Many of the players that did stick in the NHL, however, do not yet have rookie cards. On the heels of the lockout, the NHLPA announced that in-season NHL debutants would not be featured on rookie cards until the 2013-14 sets were released this summer. As such, top prospects-turned-rookies such as Tarasenko, Justin Schultz, Dougie Hamilton, Nail Yakupov, Alex Galchenyuk and Mikael Granlund are not yet featured on NHL cards.

From the Future Watch’s top-20 list, fans can chase five players on NHL rookie cards: Bartschi (No.15), Jakob Silfverberg (No.18) and Chris Kreider (No.20) from 2012-13 sets as well as Mark Scheifele (No.14) and Mika Zibanejad (No.17) from 2011-12 sets.

Other Future Watch prospects with rookie cards are Jaden Schwartz (No.29) who is available in 2012-13 sets, Brendan Smith (No.26) Brandon Saad (No.33) and Marcus Foligno (No.44) who are available in 2011-12 sets, and Robin Lehner (No.24) and Jacob Markström (No.30) who are available in 2010-11 sets.
