Collectors will find an average of three memorabilia “hits” in every hobby box of 2011-12 Upper Deck Artifacts. A “hit” is hobby-talk for a special insert; the better the insert, the better the “hit.” True to word, we found three such memorabilia hits in our 10-pack box: two dual jersey cards and one dual patch card.

The Upper Deck Company released 2011-12 Upper Deck Artifacts in October 2011, shortly after the start of the new NHL season. There are four cards in each pack (on average) and 10 packs in each hobby box.

If you are opening a single pack of Upper Deck Artifacts, you may or may not come across one of these memorabilia hits. Fortunately, there are other types of hits seeded throughout the 2011-12 Upper Deck Artifacts product. In fact, we found an average of one special card in every pack, be it a serial-numbered high-number subset card, a rookie redemption card, a signature card, or one of the memorabilia cards.

A typical pack will include three base cards (from the 100-card shell set), one special card, and one blank white “decoy”. Some packs may include two special cards, perhaps including one of the rookie redemption cards. Rookie redemption cards can be redeemed up until Sep. 9, 2013. The rookie player list for each redemption series (rookie cards 201-242 and rookie autographs A1-A16) is announced after the start of the 2011-12 season.

Our best pack included four base cards plus a rare, ultra thick “Tundra Tandems” dual patch card. In this one pack, the thick patch “hit” replaced the decoy card.

In one box, we collected about one third of the 100-card shell set (28 out of 100). This year’s shell set includes a mix of active and retired players, including six honoured members from the Hockey Hall of Fame. Including all basic and special cards (but excluding the redemption rookies), there are more than 300 players featured in 2011-12 Upper Deck Artifacts. That count includes 30 honoured members, including Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr.

Of note, the nine players listed as “Winnipeg” in this series are in fact pictured with the Atlanta Thrashers. Images of the new Jets gear were not available at the time of this product’s printing.
