BY THE BOX • 2011-12 SCORE

This year’s Score hockey series does what it is supposed to do: it captures the story of hockey in the palm of your hands.

At less than a “toonie” per hobby pack, Score hockey offers the perfect package for the novice or experience collector: clean card front design, entertaining and often relevant photography, colourful card back design, year-by-year statistical summary, and a short player story.

This marks the third week in a row that we have featured Score in our weekly “Review” via a different series of packaging. After sampling first the value/rack pack (52 cards) and then the value/mini box (77 more cards), we have now cracked a full 36-pack hobby pack to see a little more of what Score has to offer.

The more we crack of this product, the more we like of it.

Now granted, the so-called “entry” level products are not always collector favourites for “veterans” that love to bust through their boxes quicker than some collectors can rip through a single pack. If you are putting this set together too quickly, you may miss some of the enjoyable nuances of this series.

Take for instance some of the photos included in the set. Mid-summer and pre-season photos of the new Winnipeg Jets are included in the series, this despite the product’s early release in November. A handful of other players have updated 2011-12 photos from their new teams (like Jeff Carter at the Blue Jackets press conference) while other players simply have the new team logo (like Jaromir Jagr “Signed by the Flyers”).

BY THE PACK: 11 packs of 2011-12 Score

• 183 cards from the 500-card base set
• 19 Hot Rookies
• 37 parallel cards (36 Glossy and 1 Gold)
• 13 basic insert cards (1 First Goal, 3 Making an Entrance, 3 Net Cam, 1 Playoff Heroes, 2 Sudden Death, 1 The Franchise, 1 Score B)
