NHLThe first of three 2013-14 Los Angeles Kings Legends Nights will take place Sunday Oct. 27 at the Kings-Oilers game at the Kings’ Staples Center. Fans attending the game will receive a free Jay Wells Bobblefists collectible toy before entering the building.

The promotion coincides with the Kings’ tribute to former defenceman Wells, the team’s Outstanding Defenceman in 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1985-86. It is the first of three Legends Nights, to be followed by tributes to Larry Murphy (December 7) and Jim Fox (March 13) later in the year. On all three Legends Nights, the Kings will wear retro 1980s-style jerseys.

“We are excited to continue our Legends Series and we believe that our fans enjoy honoring the individuals who helped establish our franchise,” said Kings President, Business Operations Luc Robitaille before the start of the 2013-14 season. “Jim, Larry and Jay are each very deserving.”

This marks the third year the Kings have celebrated Legends Nights. Previous Kings Legends Nights were celebrated in 2010-11 (Rogatien Vachon, Bob Berry and Bob Pulford) and 2011-12 (Bernie Nicholls, Daryl Evans and Charlie Simmer).

Wells played for the Kings from 1979-80 to 1987-88. Along with honours as the team’s top defenceman (three times in four years), he led the Kings in penalty minutes in four consecutive seasons from 1979-80 to 1982-83. He was part of the Kings’ team that famously eliminated the Wayne Gretzky-led Oilers in the 1982 playoffs (otherwise known as the Miracle on Manchester).

After his career in Los Angeles, Wells played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lighting. He won the Stanley Cup in 1994 with the Rangers.
