NHLThe Detroit Red Wings have announced they will retire Nicklas Lidström’s jersey number 5 during a special ceremony this upcoming season. The presentation will take place during “Nicklas Lidström Night” on March 6, 2014.

“For a long time, there was no doubt in ownership’s and management’s mind that Nicklas Lidström would play his entire career with the Detroit Red Wings and that his sweater would fittingly go up into the rafters along with the other all-time greatest Red Wing players – Abel, Delvecchio, Howe, Lindsay, Sawchuk and Yzerman,” said Jim Devellano, Senior Vice President of the Detroit Red Wings.

Lidström played his entire career with the Red Wings organisation, from 1991-92 through 2011-12. A four-time Stanley Cup champion, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the 2002 playoffs.

In 20 seasons, he won the Norris Trophy as the best defenceman in the league an incredible seven times.

The Detroit Red Wings will face the Colorado Avalanche on March 6 for Nicklas Lidström Night.
