Stars to retire Modano’s jersey no. 9

NHLThe Dallas Stars will retire jersey number 9 in honour of former captain Mike Modano. The jersey retirement will take place during a special pre-game presentation on Mar. 8, 2014.

“Mike Modano is a once-in-a-generation player and an American hockey icon,” Dallas Stars president/CEO Jim Lites said. “His contributions to our team, including winning the Stanley Cup and helping build hockey in Texas are immeasurable. We’re proud of everything Mike accomplished in a Stars uniform and are honored that his No. 9 will hang in our rafters.”

Modano played nearly his entire career with the Minnesota North Stars / Dallas Stars organization. Drafted first overall by Minnesota in 1988, he helped the North Stars reach the Stanley Cup final in 1991. After the franchise moved to Dallas, Modano helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999 and then reach the final in 2000.

Along with Presidents’ Trophy victories in 1998 and 1999, he won six division titles with the Stars.
