If there is one thing that In The Game can do better than anyone else, it is a retro sports card set. The hockey company’s latest creation is “The Year in Hockey”, or specifically In The Game 1972. Not only did In The Game highlight the stars and stories from that year in one set, but it also designed the cards and packaging as if the product was created 37 years ago.

Cards are packaged in a wax substrate wrapper reminiscent of the old hockey packs from yesteryear. There are eight cards in a pack plus one additional thick card – either a decoy He Shoots He Scores card or a special memorabilia card.

There are 200 cards in the base set. The set features players from the National Hockey League (cards 1-99 and 101), World Hockey Association (cards 102-151) and 1972 Summit Series (cards 151-199). There are no NHL or WHA team marks, although the cards look better without them because the design is reminiscent of the old 1970s hockey cards that featured the player from his chest up. The cards look great thanks to those cheeky grins and stylish 1970s hair-dos.

Beyond the base set, there are several basic inserts, again all highlighting the year in hockey. Those inserts are Rookies (as in 1972 rookies), Great Moments, Masked Men, Coaches, Forever Linked and Past & Present. The first five inserts are unique to hobby packs; the sixth insert (Forever Linked) is unique to retail packs.

Of course, no In The Game set would be complete without signature cards and rare memorabilia cards. The autograph set features 170 different signature cards, 34 of which are short printed. There are also 41 different one-of-a-kind cut signature cards that feature sports, entertainment and political stars from 1972.
