Capitals announce third jersey schedule

Posted on 8th February 2013 by hockeymedia in Game-Used,The Want List | Tags: ,

NHLThe Washington Capitals have announced they will wear their retro-model third jersey for seven select road games in March and April 2013. This is the same jersey design introduced after the 2011 Winter Classic, which in fact pays tribute to the original Washington Capitals jersey from 1974-75 to 1994-95.

“The Caps are one of only two NHL teams (the Toronto Maple Leafs are the other) to sport a white Third jersey,” wrote The MeiGray Group’s Barry Meisel via the meigray.com blog. “The Caps’ throwback jersey will be worn seven times this abbreviated schedule, all seven on the road.”

MORE FROM THE CAPITALS
The primary colour for the uniform is white and closely resembles the team’s original jersey, worn from 1974-75 through 1994-95. The original Capitals wordmark is featured on the front of the jersey with six stars above it and five stars beneath the numbers on each sleeve.

The Capitals will wear red pants and white helmets with their third jerseys.

(Retail versions of) the jersey are available online at shop.NHL.com and at the Verizon Center Team Store as well as Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Below is a schedule of the games the Capitals will wear the third jerseys:
Saturday, March 16 at Boston Bruins 1 p.m. CSN
Tuesday, March 19 at Pittsburgh Penguins 7:30 p.m. CSN, NBCSN, TSN2
Thursday, March 21 at Winnipeg Jets 8 p.m. CSN
Friday, March 22 at Winnipeg Jets 7 p.m. CSN, CBC
Sunday, March 24 at New York Rangers 7 p.m. NBCSN
Thursday, April 18 at Ottawa Senators 7:30 p.m. CSN
Saturday, April 20 at Montreal 7 p.m. CSN, RDS, CBC

MORE FROM THE MEIGRAY GROUP
“Caps game-worn jersey collectors are among the most loyal and rabid band of collectors,” wrote Meisel. “Each season we find the number of Caps’ collectors growing and growing. The Northern Virginia Game-Worn Jersey Expo, scheduled this year for March 30 in Sterling, Va., is one of the most popular and successful area shows in the United States.”

The NHL Lockoout and shortened 2013 season brings significant changes to the Washington Capitals’ inventory this season. Consequently, the Caps will wear two sets of home red jerseys during the 48-game regular season, but only one set of road white and one set of Thirds because both jerseys are white.

Red Set 1: January 22, 2013 – March 17, 2013
White Set 1: January 19, 2013 – April 9, 2013
Red Set 2: March 26, 2013 – April 27, 2013
Third Set 1: March 16, 19, 21, 22, 24, April 18 and 20

If the Caps qualify for the playoffs, they are expected to wear Red Set 2 and White Set 1 jerseys. Of course wearing only one set of whites over a 48-game season might necessitate some players to need a second road white jersey. That could happen on a player-by-player basis.

The Brook Laich plush toy campaign

Posted on 12th December 2011 by hockeymedia in Collectibles,The Want List | Tags: ,

NHLBleacher Creatures has launched an interesting campaign, putting the production of a potential Brooks Laich plush toy into the hands of the fans and collectors. From today through Jan. 10, collectors must pledge their intention (allegiance) in order for Bleacher Creatures to produce the unique 14-inch plush toy.

To support the campaign, fans must visit the Brooks Laich Capitals Bleacher Creatures Plush toy page at indiegogo.com. If enough fans sign up before Jan. 10, then Bleacher Creatures will produce the toy. If not, no toy will be produced.

While Laich is a local hero in Washington (and maybe a junior or midget stop or two like Seattle, Moose Jaw and hometown Wawota, AB), he is not exactly an international superhero like teammate Alex Ovechkin. Whereas other toy companies may have flat out said no to the idea of a Laich plush toy, Bleacher Creatures gave fans and collectors the executive power to say yes or no.

Laich is in his seventh full season with the Capitals, also the first year of a new six-year deal with that he signed in the off-season. Last season, he scored 48 points in 82 games. He is one of 11 Capitals that has been in Washington for each of the team’s four-straight Southeast Division titles.

This Bleacher Creatures initiative certainly adds to the Brooks Laich folklore. Our favourite Laich story, however, remains the goodwill he served after losing a Game 7 contest against the Canadiens in the opening round of the 2010 NHL playoffs. With a mother and daughter in need of help on the side of the road, Laich stopped to change their flat tire so they could get home.

Laich definitely makes it a good citizen. In 30 days, we will know if he also makes a good plush toy.

MORE FROM BLEACHER CREATURES: OUR STORY
BLEACHER CREATURES is an innovative sports licensing manufacturer and marketer that produces a variety of children’s toys through partnerships with professional sports leagues.

We create, develop, and deliver trend-relevant products providing toys and collectibles to young sports fans and those fans who are young-at-heart. Our products connect children to their favorite teams and athletes, while encouraging fun, inspiration, and play.

Since our start, fans have asked for their favorite players to become Bleacher Creatures. Instead of waiting for stores to decide to make your player, we decided to partner with the fans to make their favorites happen.

Our first test is in partnership with the NHL and the NHLPA with some amazing Washington Capitals™ fans, who asked us to make Brooks Laich. The sponsor for the program is “Brad” who has represented Capitals fans on this project. He will be working with the Capitals community to tell the story and drum up support.

The Impact
If this works, we will not only make some Capitals fans happy, but open up a new way for the consumer and fans to drive what they want. If it doesn’t work, no worries, we can always try again.

What We Need & What You Get
Here is the deal: if 900 fans will commit to purchasing a Brooks Laich Bleacher Creature, we will produce it. The cost is our normal $22.00 retail with free shipping included for this offer. Once we reach 900 orders, we will deliver the Brooks Laich 14″ Bleacher Creature about 4 months after the end of the campaign.
