MORE FROM THE SHARKS
The 2015 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series uniforms looked to embrace the significantly larger scale of the venues in ways that help enhance the in venue visual experience. By looking outside of just hockey, at other large venue events, the Reebok Design team arrived at the concept of amplification, or “Amplify” as the driving design mindset for the concept of these uniforms.

While grounded in tradition hockey uniform design motifs, the 2015 NHL Stadium Series uniforms re-interpret these elements in a more streamlined and amplified way. As part of this design process, the Reebok Design Team, NHL, and the San Jose Sharks worked together to reduce the elements of the uniform design down to its core design markers. Designers then explored how to take this core set of motifs and turn up the visual volume on them. One question repeated throughout the process was “If you can’t see it from 200 yards away, does it need to be there?” The final result are uniforms that still look like hockey uniforms, but are streamlined and bold in their visual. Some of the key design innovations resulting from this process are listed below:

STRIPING
The striping pattern, instead of being placed on the forearm, has been amplified and painted across the entire athlete, using the full torso, pant, and sock to create the team specific color pattern.

NUMBERS
Number systems are larger than normal, with the back numbers enlarged to 13 inches tall from the standard 11.5 inches, and sleeve numbers enlarged to 7 inches instead of the normal 4 inches. Multiple strokes on numbers have also been minimized in order to create a cleaner, more readable visual.

PLACEMENT
In addition being larger, the sleeve numbers are shifted to be higher on the shoulder to be more visible to the majority of viewers who sit view from an elevated sightline. The pant logo is also larger than standard size, and shifted to the outside of the leg for greater and more consistent visibility to the fans watching the game.

CONSTRUCTION
Construction and build has been simplified to the minimum needed to achieve optimal fit, performance, and team specific color blocking. The collar construction was designed to be to be more streamlined and robust, integrating it into the construction of the jersey more seamlessly. It now lays flatter, and cleaner against the shoulders and neck area.

CRESTING
The crest, although not enlarged, has been executed in lighter weight materials and features a carbon fiber finish for greater visual impact.

NEW MARKS
Appearing on the shoulder is a new mark that was created to pay tribute to the Sharks devoted fans in Northern California. The mark incorporates the state of California, with a star on San Jose, marking the exact home of the team. Placed at the bottom of the mark is the iconic dorsal shark fin, which has been borrowed from the SJ ligature the team currently uses.

Additionally, the SJ ligature, which appears on the pant, has been simplified to just the lettering making it more legible at distance.

They should make… Sharknado hockey cards

Posted on 15th July 2013 by hockeymedia in 2013-14,THEY SHOULD MAKE | Tags:

NHLLast Monday, we debuted a column entitled “They Should Make,” a new feature that will serve as our weekly ‘wish list’ of hockey cards and collectibles we would like to see produced.

Just a few days before it came time to write our second column, well… let’s just say an idea hit us like a flying shark spinning out of a tornado.

Yeah, you watched it: Sharknado. So too did the crew at the Upper Deck Company, who made light of the instant “cult hit” while simultaneously encouraging collectors to pick up the newest Animal Kingdom shark cards in 2013 Goodwin Champions (which debuts this Tuesday).

Wrote Chris Carlin via the Upper Deck Blog, “the response was extremely positive for this hokey story about a tornado casting hungry sharks at residents of Los Angeles.”

Sure, Chris, wait until they swim south to Carlsbad, San Diego and Tijuana. I don’t think any padres or xoloitzcuintles will save you then.

We digress. In returning to Chris Carlin’s piece, we quickly misread “hokey” for “hockey,” which could have made sense considering the Sharks play north of the Fin (cult “bar” in Los Angeles) at the Shark Tank (hockey arena in San Jose). Maybe, just maybe, the Upper Deck Company was considering a subset of Sharknado hockey highlights for their next trading card series.

You know, like in 1994 when Igor Larionov and the third-year Sharks knocked off the Central Division champion Red Wings in the opening round. Or a year later when Ulf Dahlén helped the Sharks knock off the Pacific Division champion Flames.

How about in 2000 when Owen Nolan helped the eighth-seed Sharks upset the Presidents’ Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in the opening round. Yeah, look it up, I bet Hart Trophy winner Chris Pronger knows all too well what it feels like to be at the end of a Sharknado.

Sure, we’re having a little fun with our article this week, but truth be told, there are endless possibilities when it comes to Sharknado hockey ideas. Even the St. Louis Blues have suggested that they have once authored a sharknado in an NHL playoff series (see tweet below).

So, in the words of Carlsbad’s finest, “if you are (ever) looking to capture the ocean’s deadliest predators, (be sure to) find them in Upper Deck products!”

Or, to quote (another) television writer Damon Lindelof (who, if Thunder Levin lets him, could always bring Sharknado 6 to the shores of Lake Ontario or to world-famous and historic Rideau Canal):

Yeah, respect, people… ‘enough said!’
