Panini shows off Future Team gallery from Score set

Posted on 2nd July 2013 by hockeymedia in Cards,Rookies,The Want List | Tags: ,

NHLPanini America has unveiled 15 card images that will be used in the new 2013-14 Score hockey series. The images were unveiled over the weekend via The Knight’s Lance. Specifically, the gallery highlights the “Future Team” insert set.

Each card image was captured at the 2012 NHLPA Rookie Showcase in Etobicoke, ON. Players climbed up onto a clear board and looked down at the camera underneath.

The 15 players featured in the set are Beau Bennett (Penguins), Jack Campbell (Stars), Charlie Coyle (Wild), Emerson Etem (Ducks), Alex Galchenyuk (Canadiens), Dougie Hamilton (Bruins), Quinton Howden (Panthers), Chris Kreider (Rangers), Scott Laughton (Flyers), Ryan Murphy (Hurricanes), Jamie Oleksiak (Stars), Justin Schultz (Oilers), Jaden Schwartz (Blues), Tyler Toffoli (Kings) and Nail Yakupov (Oilers). Photos were snapped by Gregory Shamus.

Wrote Tracy Hackler, “the idea started as a suggestion from Shamus, a Pittsburgh Penguins team photographer who has experimented with the concept a few times in the past. Panini America’s Jeff Olsen (Photo Editor), Brandon Lesley (Creative Director) and Karvin Cheung (NHL Brand Manager) loved the idea and were anxious to see it executed inside Toronto’s MasterCard Centre during last year’s Showcase.”

The cards will be in the hands of collectors later this month with the release of Score hockey.

“We’re always looking at how to push the envelope, whether it’s with autographs, memorabilia or photography,” said Cheung. “We strive to bring something to collectors outside the usual, and photo ideas and photo selection are critical to the success of that process and of our products.”

Along with the card gallery, Panini America also uploaded a two-minute video called “Panini Unwrapped: The Making of 2013-14 Score Hockey’s Future Team Score Insert.”

Yakupov and Co. arrive at NHLPA Rookie Showcase ’12

NHLNail Yakupov and fellow (potential) rookies have kicked off the 2012 National Hockey League Players’ Association Rookie Showcase. This year’s event, which runs Monday and Tuesday Aug. 27-28 in Toronto, features 30 NHL prospects including top-five draft picks Yakupov, Ryan Murray, Alex Galchenyuk, Griffin Reinhart and Morgan Rielly. The prospects are being interviewed, photographed, videotaped and hounded for autographs by the NHLPA and its licensees EA Sports, Panini America and the Upper Deck Company.

This year marks the fourth year of the event. While licensees have the opportunity to capture all 30 prospects at the event, they must wait until a prospect makes his NHL debut before they can use the material. For trading card companies Panini America and the Upper Deck Company, that includes the photographs and autographs they capture at the event.

While the NHLPA Rookie Showcase used to be a one-day event, it is now a two-day bonanza. While much of the first day was held at a Toronto hotel, much of the second day will be held at an ice rink so that licensees can capture the players on skates in their NHL uniforms.

The NHLPA Rookie Showcase features more than just the top-ranked draft picks from the recent NHL Entry Draft. In fact, it features first-round draft picks from several years. There are six first rounders from 2012 (including No. 20 pick Scott Laughton), five first rounders from 2011 (including No. 9 pick Dougie Hamilton), 10 first rounders from 2010 (including No. 11 pick Jack Campbell), and one first rounder from 2009 (the No. 19 pick Chris Kreider). Eight other players were drafted in rounds two or later from 2006 to 2011.

The National Hockey League Players’ Association has announced that 30 rookie prospects will take part in this year’s NHLPA Rookie Showcase on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. The event provides NHL-NHLPA trading card manufacturers Panini America and Upper Deck Company with an all-in-one photo session to capture potential rookies for the 2012-13 hockey card season. All 30 rookies will be wearing their respective NHL uniforms.

While Panini America and Upper Deck Company will have the opportunity to capture all 30 rookies on the day, there is no guarantee that the companies will get to use the photography on their licensed trading cards. EA Sports will also be on hand to capture head scans for the upcoming NHL 13 video game.

This year’s NHLPA Rookie Showcase will feature the top five picks from the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, including first-overall pick Nail Yakupov.

UDC releases fifth Rookie Showcase fun video

Posted on 14th May 2011 by hockeymedia in Hobby News,Rookies,The Want List | Tags: ,

The Upper Deck Company has released its fifth run rookie video from the NHLPA Rookie Showcase from last September. The clip entitled “Upper Deck Pinpoints Overzealous Fans for NHL Rookies” features Brayden Schenn, Jeff Skinner and Joe Colborne.

MORE FROM THE UPPER DECK COMPANY
At the annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase in Toronto, Upper Deck staffers show up to capture unique on-ice film and footage of the NHL’s newest rookie recruits. The photo shoots are awesome, allowing the company to secure shots of the players sporting their new NHL uniforms for the first time, but the video vignettes are what usually bring the house down. Just prior to the start of this season, at the MasterCard Centre in Etobicoke, Ontario, Upper Deck was back at it with the best of the NHL’s finest young guns prepping to make their on-ice debuts earlier this season. There were 23 NHL newcomers in attendance (up from 14 last year) sporting their new hockey uniforms in a variety of poses for upcoming card releases. Along with the photo sessions, Upper Deck also produced a total of five rookie videos, the last of which is now ready for its theatrical release – just in time for the Conference Finals.

Additional skits included media training scenarios and how to sign autographs like a champ. Rookies ranging from Colborne and Tyler Seguin (Bruins) to Erik Gudbranson and Jacob Markstrom (Panthers) to Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle (Oilers) all took turns in front of the camera as Upper Deck put them in various scenes. It was a thrill for each of the rookies to participate.

Collectors can look for rookie cards of these NHL newcomers appearing this month inside Upper Deck’s 2010-11 SP Authentic Hockey release, which hit store shelves a few weeks ago.
