1974 STANLEY CUP: FLYERS ARE FIRST EXPANSION TEAM TO WIN TITLE

NHLThe Philadelphia Flyers won their first of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in the 1974 National Hockey League playoffs. In the final series, the Flyers beat the Boston Bruins four games to two, including a 1-0 victory in the series finale on May 19.

ROAD TO THE 1974 STANLEY CUP: FLYERS IN THE PLAYOFFS

The Flyers won 12 of 17 games en route to their Stanley Cup victory in 1974. After finishing second in the regular-season standings behind the Bruins, the Flyers swept the Atlanta Flames in the quarter-final series, eliminated the New York Rangers in a seven-game semi-final series, and beat the Bruins in a six-game final series.

CONN SMYTHE TROPHY WINNER: BERNIE PARENT

Philadelphia Flyers’ goalie Bernie Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the 1974 playoffs. In 17 games, he posted a 2.02 goals-against average including shutouts against the Rangers and Bruins. As listed in the 2012 Vintage Collector’s Almanac & Price Guide, a Parent 8″x10″ signed photo costs approximately $40.

STARS OF THE 1974 PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Along with Parent, two other players from the 1974 Philadelphia Flyers have since become honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame: Bill Barber and Bobby Clarke. The cost to purchase signed photos of those two stars is $35 for Barber and $85 for Clarke.

HEROES OF YEAR TWO

The 1968-69 Philadelphia Flyers made the playoffs, but were then eliminated in four-straight games by the Blues. The team’s new captain was Ed Van Impe. The team’s top scorers were André Lacroix and Jean-Guy Gendron. The goaltending tandem featured Bernie Parent and Doug Favell.

HALL OF JERSEYS

Several former Flyers are now honoured members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Some of those early legends were #1 Bernie Parent, #7 Bill Barber and #16 Bobby Clarke. Five more honoured members are #2 Mark Howe, #6 Allan Stanley, #18 Dale Hawerchuk, #27 Darryl Sittler, and #77 Paul Coffey. Four numbers have been retired by the team: #1 Parent, #4 Barry Ashbee, #7 Barber and #16 Clarke.

GAME EDITION 2012-13

1975 STANLEY CUP: FLYERS WIN BACK-TO-BACK TITLES

NHLThe Philadelphia Flyers won their second-straight Stanley Cup in 1975, this time defeating the Buffalo Sabres in a six-game final series. After taking a two-game lead in the series with back-to-back victories at home, the Flyers then lost back-to-back games on the road. The Flyers then won 5-1 at home and 2-0 on the road to win the 1975 Stanley Cup championship.

ITG announces Broad Street Boys sell out

NHLIn The Game has announced that the upcoming 2012 In The Game Broad Street Boys hockey card series has sold out. Set for a June 29 release, ITG announced the good news more than a week before the launch of the all-Philadelphia Flyers series.

“Thank you collectors for your support,” wrote Dr. Brian Price. “I know it is very hot in Philadelphia today, but it’s going to get hotter next Friday.”

Limited to only 4,000 boxes, each box (pack) will include eight base cards and six inserts. The base set will feature “the history of the Flyers” including listed subsets Expansion Year, Broad Street Bullies, Triumph and Tragedy, Contending in the 90s, New Millennium, and Continuing the Tradition.

The inserts will be a combination of game-used memorabilia cards and authentic signature cards (including cut signature cards).

Parent to sign at Frozen Pond on Saturday

NHLBernie Parent will sign autographs at the Frozen Pond hockey memorabilia store this Saturday June 9, 2012. The Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member will be on location in Concord, ON (just north of Toronto) from 11:30am to 1pm. Parent won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles with the Philadelphia Flyers, also winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in each of those Cup seasons. He was an NHL First Team All-Star during the regular season of both of those campaigns (1973-74 and 1974-75). While Parent spent most of his career with the Flyers (1967-68 to 1978-79), he also played briefly with the Boston Bruins (1965-66 and 1966-67) and Toronto Maple Leafs (1970-71 and 1971-72).

Before turning pro, Parent won the Memorial Cup in 1965 with the Niagara Falls Flyers. In the Ontario Hockey Association, Parent was a two-time winner of the Dave Pinkney Trophy with the best team goals-against average in the league.
In 1984, Parent became an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

NHLDo you remember those player flags from the 2012 NHL Winter Classic game back in January. Seven such Philadelphia Flyers “player introduction” flags are up for auction via MeiGray and auction.nhl.com. Fans can bid on the flags up until this Apr. 26, 2012.

Each orange-black-and-white flag measures 47″ x 70″. The players last name is written in capital letters above the Flyers team logo. The eight flags features in the auction are Bob Kelly, John LeClair, Eric Lindros, Bernie Parent, Keith Primeau, Jeremy Roenick, Chris Therien and Joe Watson.

The starting bid amount on each of these flags is $150.

Flyers Mark Howe warm-up jerseys

NHLThe MeiGray Group and the Philadelphia Flyers have launched the Mark Howe Night warm-up jersey auction via nhl.auction.com. The auction runs through March 27, 2012 at 9pm.

These warm-up jerseys were all worn on Mar. 6 at the Flyers’ Wells Fargo Center, the night the Flyers retired Howe’s No. 2. Every player wore a “2 / Howe” jersey for the pre-game skate. Each jersey had the Howe patch sewn onto the right front of the jersey; the player’s actual number was written on the fight strap inside the jersey.

Flyers jersey auction to benefit McCrimmon charity

MeiGray’s final Flyers Winter Classic auction

NHLThe fourth and final MeiGray-Philadelphia Flyers 2012 Winter Classic hockey auction has opened. The auction – featuring everything from game-worn pants to – runs Feb. 22 to Mar. 7, 2012. The auction also features a set of game-worn jerseys from the recent Feb. 11 game against the Rangers.

The auction features:
· 19 pairs of pants/pants shells worn by the Flyers during the Winter Classic and/or on February 11, 2012.
· 19 pairs of gloves worn by the Flyers during the Winter Classic and/or on February 11, 2012.
· 22 pairs of socks worn by the Flyers during the Winter Classic and/or on February 11, 2012.

The set of socks, gloves, pants, and pants shells that the Flyers wore in the Winter Classic were worn again by the team on February 11, in their 5-2 loss to the Rangers at Wells Fargo Center.

The game-worn jerseys are similar to those worn in January at the Winter Classic, but they are indeed a new set and do not feature the Winter Classic patch.

MeiGray Winter Classic auction open for bidding

NHLThe annual MeiGray Group / NHL Winter Classic game-used memorabilia hockey auction has opened. The auction features game-worn jerseys from both the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, this year’s participants in the annual outdoor game. The auction closes Jan. 26 at 9pm.

Along with game-worn jerseys, the auction features the goal pucks and game pucks. Each of these pucks feature the unique NHL Winter Classic Philadelphia 2012 logo that was used for this game only.

The National Hockey League’s fifth annual Winter Classic, the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, was a thriller that kept the 46,967 fans who packed Citizens Bank Park captivated until the final buzzer. On January 2, 2012 in Philadelphia, the New York Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2.

· 18 jerseys worn by the Rangers during the first period. The jersey worn in the first period by Anton Stralman was presented to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The jersey worn in the first period by Brandon Prust is not available.

· 19 jerseys worn by the Flyers during the first period. The jersey worn in the first period by Andreas Lilja was presented to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

· The 7 jerseys prepared for the Rangers who did not play in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The Rangers honoured their past by wearing a beige jersey with red and navy stripes and accents. The vintage crest was inspired by the late 1920s era shield that introduced this Original 6 franchise that was founded in 1926. Affixed to the right shoulder of each jersey is the 2012 NHL Winter Classic patch.

The Flyers honoured their storied history since their introduction into the NHL in 1967-68 by reintroducing black to their traditional orange and white colors. Their classic logo centered a jersey with a new and unique striping pattern. The team honored Pennsylvania, the Keystone State, by using the state shield to frame the C and As of their captain and alternate captains. Affixed to the right breast of each jersey is the 2012 NHL Winter Classic patch.
