Senators celebrate Roger Neilson Night

Posted on 10th December 2011 by hockeymedia in Game Promotions,The Want List,Tribute | Tags:

NHLThe Ottawa Senators will pay tribute to former coach Roger Neilson before tonight’s Ottawa Senators-Vancouver Canucks game. Each fan in attendance will receive a Neilson commemorative towel courtesy Bell.

Neilson is of course famously remembered for waving a white towel in protest to a referee’s on-ice performance during the 1982 NHL playoffs when he was a coach with the Canucks. His message to the referee was as simple as “we surrender.” Neilson’s act then became a rallying point for Vancouver fans as waving white towels became a message to the coach and team: we support you all the way. That playoff season, Neilson’s “Towel Power” pushed the Canucks all the way to the Stanley Cup final.

Also as part of the evening’s festivities, 1972 Summit Series hero Paul Henderson will be on hand to drop the ceremonial puck before the game. Henderson is on tour with his original 1972 Canada jersey, the same one he wore when he scored his historic goal to beat the Soviets.
Neilson ended his NHL coaching career with the Ottawa Senators, stepping behind the bench for his 1,000th game in April 2002. He became an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002 and passed away less than a year later in June 2003.
