UDC to produce Team Canada hockey card set

Posted on 1st May 2013 by hockeymedia in Cards,The Want List | Tags: ,

NHLThe Upper Deck Company has announced it will produce a 2013 Upper Deck Team Canada hockey card set. The new series will be designed in the mold of the popular Upper Deck (standard) hockey card brand, but will feature players in their Team Canada gear rather than NHL colours.

“The 2013 Upper Deck Team Canada Hockey set will be right in line with the base Upper Deck brand in terms of price and configuration,” wrote Upper Deck Company marketing guru Chris Carlin via the Upper Deck Blog. “There will be five cards per pack, 24 packs per box and 12 boxes per case.

“The cards will all feature the same great photography as collectors have come to expect from the flagship Upper Deck brand, but the product will have richer content with two autographs in every box on average and four boxes per case will have a third autograph card.”

The Upper Deck Company has had a long-standing relationship with Hockey Canada dating back to its first hockey card season in 1990-91. While UDC has often featured Hockey Canada players in its NHL-NHLPA sets, this is the by far UDC’s biggest hockey card commitment to the Hockey Canada jersey.

The autograph insert set will boast “approximately” 200 former Team Canada players. Other highlights include the SE foil-board cards and the rare acetate Clear Cut cards.

The jersey promotes a “Fight With Us” movement led by national partner Sport Chek in support of Hockey Canada and LIVESTRONG’s fight against cancer. Fans can purchase the limited edition jersey and other LIVESTRONG apparel at Sport Chek stores in Canada.

“Cancer will strike one in two men and one in three women in our lifetime. It’s a staggering reality that demands attention – an issue Nike remains committed to through support of the LIVESTRONG Foundation,” said Joe Monahan with Nike LIVESTRONG. “The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship presents an amazing opportunity to celebrate the LIVESTRONG movement in Canada and Nike is thrilled that the members of Canada’s National Women’s Team, the leaders at Hockey Canada and our partners at Sport Chek have joined together in our ongoing battle against cancer.”

“LIVESTRONG is about a cause and not one individual. The Nike LIVESTRONG collection supports the LIVESTRONG Foundation,” said Doug Ulman, president of LIVESTRONG. “Since 2009, the LIVESTRONG Foundation has worked to help cancer survivors move beyond treatment through the Cancer Transitions program in cities across Canada.”

“Hockey Canada and Team Canada have had a strong partnership with Nike for nearly 20 years. In that time we have seen how their ongoing commitment to the LIVESTRONG Foundation has made a real and undeniable difference in the fight against cancer,” said Dan Church, head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Team. “As a team, are extremely proud be a part of this opportunity and we look forward to wearing the jersey with pride and supporting this great cause.”
