NHLThe Hockey News has picked Jonathan Huberdeau as their mid-season Outstanding Rookie in the NHL. The selection was made via a vote from nine THN staff members.

The 19-year old Florida Panthers’ rookie has scored 17 points in his first 26 NHL games. He ranks second amongst NHL rookies in scoring, but first in goals scored. According to THN writers, the mid-season rookie selection was “a two-horse race between the 2011 Memorial Cup MVP (Huberdeau) and the 2012 AHL MVP Cory Conacher.”

Huberdeau has yet to be featured on an NHL-NHLPA rookie card, with the debut expected in August when the new 2013-14 sets hit the market. In this shortened NHL campaign, the NHLPA decided to save this year’s rookie crop for next year’s hockey card sets.

Along with Huberdeau (first place, 22 vote points) and Conacher (second place, 21 vote points), other NHL rookies highlighted by The Hockey News were Justin Schultz (7), Alex Galchenyuk (1), Brendan Gallagher (1), and Dougie Hamilton (1). All six of those NHL rookies will make their debut in the 2013-14 hockey card sets.
