Red Wings Garage Sale this Saturday in Detroit

NHLThe Detroit Red Wings will hold a Garage Sale on Saturday, May 31. The sale at Hockeytown Authentics will run from 11am to 7pm.

The one-day sale will give fans the opportunity to buy game-used equipment and memorabilia, including game-worn jerseys from the Nicklas Lidström Night.

As noted on redwings.nhl.com, “this one-day-only sale includes game-used hockey equipment such as sticks, skates, gloves and helmet visors. Autographed items, including pucks, photos, skates and sticks, will also be available for fans to add to their collections. Quantities are limited for all of these one-of-a-kind items.”

Before doors open to the general public at 11am, Red Wings season ticket holders will have a one-hour advance sale starting at 10am.

Nicklas Lidström Night hockey jerseys up for auction

NHLThe Detroit Red Wings will auction off Nicklas Lidström Night practice jerseys worn last month. The auction closes on Thursday Apr. 3, 2014.

Each of the red jerseys features the No. 5 and “Lidstrom” on the jersey back. Each jersey was worn by a different player in the pre-game warm-up ahead of the Red Wings home game on Mar. 6, 2014.

As noted by the Red Wings, “all of the jerseys in the auction feature a special commemorative Nicklas Lidström patch. The authentic jerseys worn by current players are signed by Lidström and the individual Red Wings player who wore the jersey that night.”

Lidström played for the Red Wings from 1991-92 to 2011-12. He won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenceman seven times (from 2000-01 to 2010-11).

Kelly to sign autographs on Sunday at Toronto Card Show

AHLEight-time Stanley Cup winner Red Kelly will sign autographs this Sunday at the Toronto Card Show. The former Red Wings defenceman / Maple Leafs forward will sign autographs from noon until 2pm on Sunday, Mar. 16.

Kelly won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings in the 1950s and four Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs in the 1960s. He won the Norris Trophy and was a runner-up in voting for the Hart Trophy in 1953-54.

The price of any Kelly autograph at the show is just $15. Admission to the show is free. Kelly previously signed at the Toronto Card Show in September 2010.

The Mar. 16 show will be the third of the Toronto Card Show’s 2014 calendar year. In January, the Toronto Card Show featured autograph guest Norm Ullman; upcoming in April, the show will feature autograph guest Johnny Bower.

Red Wings will retire Nicklas Lidström’s jersey no. 5

NHLThe Detroit Red Wings will retire jersey no. 5 in honour of team legend Nicklas Lidström. The jersey retirement ceremony will take place on Thursday, Mar. 6, 2014.

All fans in attendance will receive a Red Wings mini banner honouring Lidström. Also that night, the current Red Wings will warm up wearing no. 5 jerseys.

Lidström won three Stanley Cup playoff championships with the Red Wings, helping Hockeytown win it all in 1997, 1998 and 2002. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff’s most valuable player in 2002.

Lidström played for the Red Wings from 1991-92 to 2011-12. He won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenceman seven times (from 2000-01 to 2010-11).

“It just seems so much bigger than I imagined,” Lidström said. “I’ve been looking up at the rafters for a long time and seeing those name and it’s a little surreal that my name is going to be going up there too and it’s a tremendous honor to have my name up there as well.”

“I think just a lot of memories coming back, I’m sure they’ll have a video or two up there and seeing some of my former teammates, just everything surrounding the ceremony and everything,” Lidstrom said. “I think that’s why it will be emotional.”

Hall of Fame manager Allen, 90, passes away

NHLKeith Allen, a Stanley Cup winner both as a player and general manager, has passed away. The Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member was 90 years old.

Born and raised in Saskatoon, Allen played senior and minor-pro hockey, winning the Calder Cup in 1943 with the Buffalo Bisons. He eventually worked his way up to the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, winning the Stanley Cup in 1954.

After serving as a coach at the minor-pro level, Allen was picked as head coach of the NHL’s expansion Philadelphia Flyers. He then became the team’s general manager, leading the club to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975.

Born on 21 August 1923, he passed away on 4 February 2014. He became an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

Howard bobbles a Detroit Red Wings giveaway on Monday

NHLThe Detroit Red Wings will complete its 2013-14 hockey bobbles series on Monday, Jan. 20. The five-player series concludes with Jimmy Howard Bobble Night before the Red Wings-Blues game at Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings’ 2013-14 bobble series promotion features five different players. All five bobbles (7,500 of each) are sponsored by AT&T.

Earlier this year, the Red Wings celebrated Bobble Nights for Henrik Zetterberg (Nov. 7), Daniel Alfredsson (Nov. 23), Pavel Datsyuk (Dec. 4) and Niklas Kronwall (Dec. 19).

A runner-up in voting for the Calder Trophy in 2009-10, goaltender Howard finished sixth in voting for the Vézina Trophy voting in 2012-13. He has been the Red Wings’ number-one goalie since 2009-10.

This 2013-14 season, other NHL teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild have also distributed hockey bobbles.

In 2010-11, the Red Wings’ American League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, celebrated Jimmy Howard Bobble Night on Jan. 22, 2011.


MeiGray sells authentic Winter Classic game-worn jerseys

NHLGame-worn jerseys from the NHL Winter Classic are available now via a MeiGray auction. Fans can bid on the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys until Jan. 23, 2014.

The jerseys were won on Jan. 1, 2014 at the “Big House” in Detroit, an outdoor classic hockey game that drew 105,491 fans on the grounds of the University of Michigan.

Included in the auction are 16 game-worn Red Wings jerseys (worn during the first period), 20 game-worn Maple Leafs jerseys (also from the first period), eight game-issued Red Wings jerseys, six game-issued Maple Leafs jerseys, and game-used and practice-used Winter Classic hockey pucks.

Both Winter Classic jerseys – the red Red Wings and blue Maple Leafs gamers – pay tribute to team designs from the 1930s.

Two years ago, the 2012 MeiGray Winter Classic auction featured game-worn jerseys from the Flyers-Rangers game in Philadelphia. One year prior, the 2011 MeiGray Winter Classic auction featured game-worn jerseys from the Penguins-Capitals game in Pittsburgh. In 2010, the MeiGray Winter Classic auction featured game-worn jerseys from the Bruins-Flyers game in Boston.

Upper Deck produces Winter Classic hockey card set

NHLThe Upper Deck Company has unveiled details for a 20-player hockey card set that will be distributed free at the 2014 NHL Winter Classic in Detroit, the outdoor hockey game that will put the Red Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 2013-14 Upper Deck Winter Classic set features 10 Red Wings (cards WC1-10) and 10 Maple Leafs (cards WC11-20).

“Every fan in attendance will receive a free pack of these cards,” wrote Chris Carlin via the Upper Deck Blog. “Upper Deck will have a booth set up at the venue where fans can score more packs to trade in order to complete the entire set.

“It won’t just be about trading at Upper Deck’s booth as fans will have the opportunity to get their very own personalized Upper Deck trading card produced at the venue for free! Get to the Big House early so you can score some of these awesome collectibles!”

Of course, these Upper Deck Winter Classic cards will feature photos from regular season and/or playoff action. Card collectors can expect images from the outdoor 2014 Winter Classic game in future hockey card sets, a tradition that dates back to the first Winter Classic in 2008. That year, the Upper Deck Company included “Winter Classic” inserts in 2008-09 O-Pee-Chee, Upper Deck and Upper Deck MVP.

Two years ago, Panini America produced a 2011-12 Pinnacle Winter Classic hockey card series for the Flyers-Rangers game in Philadelphia.

The 2014 Winter Classic is Jan. 1, 2014.

Kronwall bobble a Red Wings giveaway on Thursday

NHLThe Detroit Red Wings will distribute free Niklas Kronwall bobbleheads to their fans attending the Thursday, Dec. 19 home game. The Kronwall promotion is the fourth of five Red Wings bobbles to be distributed this 2013-14 season.

The Kronwall bobble will be distributed to the first 7,500 fans attending the Red Wings-Flames hockey game. The Joe Louis Arena giveaway is sponsored by AT&T.

Along with Kronwall, the complete five-bobble set includes Henrik Zetterberg (Nov. 7), Daniel Alfredsson (Nov. 23), Pavel Datsyuk (Dec. 4) and Jimmy Howard (Jan. 20).

Paul Coffey to sign autographs on Saturday

NHLHockey Hall of Fame honoured member Paul Coffey will sign autographs this Saturday Dec. 7, 2013 at A.J. Sports World in Vaughan, ON. Coffey will be in store from 1-2pm.

The price for Coffey autographs is $35 for regular items or $50 for premium items.

Coffey was a Stanley Cup winner with the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins and a Presidents’ Trophy winner with the Oilers and Detroit Red Wings. Coffey also reached the Stanley Cup final with the Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers.

From the blueline, he won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenceman in 1984-85 and 1985-86. He became an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
