Stanley Cup winner Ron Murphy, 80, passes away

NHLOne-time Stanley Cup winner Ron Murphy has passed away. He was 80 years old.

Born in Hamilton, Murphy played his junior hockey in Ontario and won a Memorial Cup championship with the Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters in 1952. After winning the Memorial Cup, he made his NHL debut in 1952-53 with the New York Rangers.

During his NHL career, Murphy played for four of the six so-called “Original Six” teams: the Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 1961.

Many years after his career, he told The Hockey News that, “the parade (Chicago) threw us (in 1961) was something I won’t ever forget.”

In 1968-69, he and Bruins’ linemates Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge set an NHL record by scoring 263 combined points.

Born on 10 April 1933, he passed away on 6 March 2014.

Former NHL captain Doug Mohns, 80, passes away

NHLDoug Mohns, who played for several NHL teams and wore the captain’s “C” for the expansion Washington Capitals, has passed away. He was 80 years old.

Born in Capreol, ON, Canada, he twice won the Memorial Cup in a three-year period with the Barrie Flyers. He was one of two Barrie players (along with Ralph Willis) to be part of both the 1951 and 1953 championship teams.

In the NHL, Mohns was a long-time member of the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. In 1961-62, he won the Bruins’ E.C. Dufresne Trophy as the player ‘who has been most outstanding in home games.’ In 1966-67, he helped the Blackhawks win the Prince of Wales Trophy as the club set a franchise record with 41 wins.

One noted for having “a booming shot, one of the heaviest in league,” Mohns then rounded out his NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames and expansion Capitals. He was the first captain of the Capitals in 1974-75.

Born on 13 December 1933, Mohns passed away on 7 February 2014.

Shaw and Saad are Blackhawks bobbles in coming days

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks will distribute Andrew Shaw and Brandon Saad bobbleheads in two upcoming 2013-14 home games this weekend. The Shaw bobbles will be distributed Friday Jan. 17 while the Saad bobbles will be distributed Sunday Jan. 19.

These are the second and third bobbles in the Blackhawks’ four-player series. The Bryan Bickell bobble was distributed on Dec. 14 while the Patrick Kane bobble is scheduled for Mar. 14.

On both Friday and Sunday, it will be the first 10,000 fans that receive the Blackhawks’ giveaway gift. The Shaw bobble is sponsored by Mesirow Financial while the Saad bobble is sponsored by AT & T.

Bobbleheads have been a popular giveaway in recent years at Chicago Blackhawks home games. Other 2013-14 Blackhawks’ giveaways include team calendar, replica rings, hats, pendants and shirts.


Blackhawks unveil Stadium Series hockey jersey

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks have unveiled their specially-designed 2014 NHL Stadium Series hockey jerseys. The black jerseys will be worn for an outdoor hockey game at Soldier Field (March 1 against the Penguins).

Other Stadium Series games this 2013-14 NHL season will be played in Los Angeles (Jan. 25 between the Kings and Anaheim Ducks) and New York (Jan. 26 Rangers-Devils and Jan. 29 Rangers-Islanders). The Islanders, Kings, Ducks, Penguins and Rangers have all unveiled their Stadium Series jerseys.

Like the other jerseys in the series, the new Blackhawks gear features a chrome treatment to the logo. According to the league press release, the chrome is inspired from “details in the NHL shield, bringing a dynamic and modern perspective to conventional team identities. The chrome crest was developed using new technology that fuses print and embroidery and allows logos to be displayed as a high-resolution image incorporated into the crest. This technology also reduces the weight of the crest, resulting in a lightweight jersey for improved athlete performance.”

Blackhawks donate Stanley Cup ring to Hockey Hall of Fame

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks have donated a 2013 Stanley Cup championship ring to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The presentation was made in Toronto on Dec. 14, 2013.

The Blackhawks, two-time winners in the last four years, made the presentation at the Hockey Hall of Fame Museum in downtown Toronto (before the Maple Leafs-Blackhawks game). Team president John McDonough made the presentation to museum curator Phil Pritchard.

According to the Blackhawks, the “ring was designed to tell the story of the Blackhawks memorable season of achieving the “One Goal” of becoming the NHL 2013 Stanley Cup Champions.” It is a ruby-and-diamond encrusted ring with the Blackhawks logo on the face and five miniature Stanley Cups on the side (representing 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010 and 2013).

“We are very grateful to the Blackhawks organization, especially, Rocky Wirtz, John McDonough, Jay Blunk, Stan Bowman, Al MacIsaac and Norm Maciver,” said Pritchard. “The 2013 Championship ring makes a great addition to the Stanley Cup Championship display. Our guests, who visit us from around the world, will be thrilled to be able to view it.”

Bickell bobble a Blackhawks giveaway on Sunday

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks will distribute Bryan Bickell bobbleheads to their fans on Sunday, Dec. 15. The Sunday promotion is the first of four bobble nights to be promoted by the Blackhawks this 2013-14 season.

The first 10,000 fans attending the Blackhawks-Kings game on Sunday will receive the collectible Bickell bobble. The promotion is sponsored by Lemonhead.

Following the Bickell giveaway, the Blackhawks will celebrate Andrew Shaw Bobble Night on Jan. 17, Brandon Saad Bobble Night on Jan. 19, and Patrick Kane Bobble Night on Mar. 14.

The Sunday giveaway also happens to be the first of two Bickell bobble giveaways in the next week. On Saturday Dec. 21, the Milwaukee Admirals will distribute their own Bickell bobbles to the first 2,500 fans attending their home game.


Blackhawks sell out Stanley Cup ice for charity

NHLFor $99, you could have owned a vial of ice from the 2013 Stanley Cup championship. The collectible was on sale to benefit the Chicago Blackhawks Charities, but the 2,013 vials sold out quickly.

The vials are numbered from 1 to 2,013, every one presented in a leather-embossed display box engraved with the Blackhawks logo. Each vial also comes with a corresponding certificate of authenticity.

The vials are scheduled to be shipped to collectors in December 2013.

Blackhawks Hockey Fights Cancer jersey auction

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks’ Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys worn Saturday have gone up for auction on Monday. The auction closes Nov. 1, 2013.

Hockey Fights Cancer is a league-wide initiative throughout the month of October. Proceeds from the sales of this auction will benefit the Chicago Blackhawks Charities.

The Blackhawks’ jerseys were worn exclusively in the warm up before the Oct. 19 hockey game at the United Center in Chicago. Each jersey features lavender numbers and lettering. The jerseys are also individually signed by the players.

In the same auction, there are also lavender ties worn by the Blackhawks’ coaches and broadcasters.

Bowman to sign autographs on Monday at Frozen Pond

Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member Scotty Bowman will sign autographs this Monday Oct. 7, 2013 at the Frozen Pond hockey memorabilia store in Concord, ON. The in-store appearance will run for one hour from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

The cost for Bowman autographs are $29 for flat items and $39 for bulky items. For more information, collectors are encouraged to contact the store at 905.760.8404.

Coach Bowman became an honoured member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. He later was inducted on Canada’s Walk of Fame (2003), inducted in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (2004), and became an Officer of the Order of Canada (2011). As coach or a member of team staff, he has won the Stanley Cup with the Montréal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.

In 2009 as part of the Canadiens’ Centennial celebrations, Bowman was voted the Best Coach in franchise history.

Collectors will also have the opportunity to mail in their personal items to get signed in case they can’t make it to the Frozen Pond store on either day.

Since 1993, Frozen Pond has established itself as the number one source for quality autograph hockey collectibles. Next month, Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member Bryan Trottier will be in store to sign autographs on Nov. 7, 2013.

Chicago Blackhawks raise their fifth Stanley Cup banner

NHLThe Chicago Blackhawks raised their fifth Stanley Cup banner on Opening Night of the 2013-14 National Hockey League season. The banner commemorates their 2013 Stanley Cup championship in June.

This marks the Blackhawks second Stanley Cup banner ceremony in four years. After winning Stanley Cups in 1934, 1937 and 1961, the Chicago franchise has added banners in 2010 and 2013.
