The Upper Deck Company has produced a series of American Hockey League cards, with the first series released before the start of the 2014-15 season. The cards are sold in a box set that features a complete 100-card base set as well as a random handful of signature cards.
The cards feature the typical, sharp Upper Deck look, with both a foil border and foil Upper Deck logo on the card front. The back features player vitals and a short bio, as well as a small head shot.
The base set features the stars of the American League, which for the most part are also the future stars of the NHL. There are 23 goalies included in the 100-card base set.
This is the first American League set produced by the Upper Deck Company. Said UDC president Jason Masherah, “We are excited to be able to work with the American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association. With the start of the hockey season just around the corner, there is no better time to announce this new deal and to offer the AHL’s dedicated fans a new way to experience the game.”
A second series of AHL cards is planned for the Spring of 2015. According to the press release, the Upper Deck Company is allowed “to produce AHL trading card games, posters, stickers and figurines.”
“The AHL is thrilled to be able to bring the excitement of our league to fans though AHL trading cards and collectibles,” said David Andrews, AHL president and chief executive officer. “I know Upper Deck will be a great licensee to work with both now and in the future.”
“This partnership is a huge credit to the caliber of players within the AHL who are thrilled to be featured by Upper Deck — a world-class leader in the trading card industry,” said Darryl Dionne, director of communications and business development for the PHPA. “This historic inaugural set is filled with top prospects on the verge of becoming full-time National Hockey League players, and we look forward to working with Upper Deck to feature PHPA Members for years to come.”
The Texas Stars will honour Mike Modano on Friday, Apr. 4, the retired legend who spent more than a decade with the NHL’s Dallas Stars. The AHL Stars will have Modano drop the puck before the Stars-Lake Erie Monsters game.
As part of the promotion, fans who arrive early will receive a Mike Modano Signature Edition Rally Towel. As it so happens, Friday night is also Toby Petersen Mini Bobble Night, so fans will take home a collectible toy, too.
Last month, the Dallas Stars honoured Mike Modano with a jersey retirement night on Mar. 8. As part of that night, the NHL Stars distributed special Panini hockey cards. Nine cards were distributed on Mar. 8, with the 10th card distributed a week later on Mar. 14.
Modano was captain of the Dallas Stars when the franchise won the Stanley Cup in 1999. Just last year as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations, he was named to the Stars’ All-Time team.
The Rockford Icehogs will distribute Brandon Saad hockey bobbles to their fans on Saturday night. The collectible giveaways will be distributed to 2,500 fans before the Icehogs-Iowa Wild hockey game on Feb. 8, 2014.
Saad split his 2012-13 season between the Icehogs and the Chicago Blackhawks, winning a Stanley Cup with the big club in June. He finished third in voting for the NHL’s Calder Trophy.
The Icehogs Saad bobble is part of a three-player Champions Night series featuring Bryan Bickell (Dec. 21), Saad (Feb. 8) and Andrew Shaw (Apr. 12). The Saad bobble is distributed courtesy local sponsor WIFR.
Incidentally, this isn’t the first Brandon Saad bobble distributed at a hockey game this year. Just last month, the Chicago Blackhawks celebrated Saad Bobble Night on Jan. 19. The Blackhawks Saad bobble was part of a four-player series that also featured Bickell, Shaw and Patrick Kane.
Along with three “Champions” bobbles in 2013-14, the Icehogs also distributed a Scotty Bowman bobble on Legends Night on Jan. 3. Following the Saad bobble giveaway on Feb. 8, the Icehogs will distribute teams sets of hockey cards on Sunday, Feb. 9.
With just one week to go until Christmas, the Lake Erie Monsters remind fans that they celebrate the “ugly” in ugly holiday sweaters this Saturday Dec. 21, 2013. The Monsters have encouraged fans to “wear their ugliest holiday sweaters” to the Sunday home game whereas the Monsters will wear “their own ugly hockey sweaters.”
The Monsters are the American League affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. The Monsters play their home games at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH.
“Ugly Holiday Sweater Night” is one of several promotional nights the Monsters will celebrate this 2013-14 AHL season. Other upcoming promotions are Cleveland Rocks Night (Jan. 25), Special Olympics Tribute Night (Feb. 8), Neon Night (Feb. 21), Monsters March for Babies Night (Mar. 7), Pink the Rink Night (Mar. 21), and Autism Awareness Night (Apr. 11).
For each of these promotional nights, the Monsters will wear a unique hockey jersey that pays tribute to the evening’s theme.

On Jan. 25, the second annual Los Angeles Kings Night will pay tribute to the Monarchs’ NHL parent team. The Monarchs will be “wearing specialty Kings-inspired jerseys that were voted on by the fans and will be available for auction.”
On Feb. 8, the annual Pink in the Rink game will be promoted with Catholic Medical Center to raise awareness and donations for breast cancer.

The Texas Stars of the American Hockey League have unveiled new hockey jerseys for the 2013-14 season. The Stars will wear the new jerseys for what will be the organisation’s fifth year in Cedar Park, TX.

“We are very excited about our new jersey designs and we believe they will help our continuous efforts to strengthen the Texas Stars brand and team identity,” said Stars president Rick McLaughlin. “We have enjoyed tremendous success on and off the ice over the past four seasons and we are really looking forward to initiating our fifth anniversary celebration with this great new look.”
The all-black away colours have been replaced by dark green; the white home jersey is a remake of the previously-designed alternate jersey used during the 2011-12 season.
For the away jerseys, the Stars note, “the crest patch will feature the team’s secondary logo. The shoulder cap is white with a primary logo patch on each side. The collar is gold and includes a white lace tie-up. The sweater will also have thick white bands on each sleeve and along the bottom hem, trimmed with black and gold. The matching socks will be principally dark green with three bands of black, gold and white just below the knee.”
For the home jerseys, the Stars note the white will be, “trimmed in dark green and gold, emblazoned with the Texas Stars primary logo on the front crest. The shoulders are dark green and have small patches featuring the Stars’ secondary logo. During the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons the team wore the alternate jersey with the original home socks, which were half white, half dark green, bisected by a thick gold band. The 2013-14 home uniforms will feature a newly designed sock of all white with bands of dark green and gold.”
