BY THE BOX • 2011-12 PINNACLEIf you are a hockey fan, then this is the set for you: 2011-12 Pinnacle captures the spirit of the game, from the rink to the locker room to the awards banquets and special events. Every hockey card offers a captivating photo, displayed horizontally on the front and discussed in text on the back.
Forget those stock player pics and black-and-white year-by-year stats found on other cards, you will only find award-winning photography on the fronts and backs of these Pinnacle hockey cards.
Panini America picks up right where it left off with last year’s re-introduction of the Pinnacle brand. Whereas last year’s series featured a mix of horizontal and vertical pics, this year’s 2011-12 series is exclusively horizontal. That means if you fit your collection into plastic pages and a binder, you won’t be constantly turning your book to view the collection.
As they did last year, all the Pinnacle base cards feature a cool photograph on the front and an explanation of the photograph on the back. (The only thing missing is the photographer’s name or photo agency).
From a single box, we put together just over 70% of the set, so we’ll need a few more packs to complete the 250-card base series. So far, the collation has been perfect: we didn’t find a single duplicate in our 24-pack box.
Some of our favourite pics include the Stanley Cup Final Game 2 Alex Burrows overtime goal celebration (card #14 Burrows), the Duncan Keith v Daniel Cleary game action pic (card #102 Keith), and the Tim Thomas Stanley Cup champion pic (card #250 Thomas).
Pinnacle doesn’t just offer an eclectic mix of moments in a hockey game, but also features players in different game jerseys including Third Jersey and Vintage variations. There are a few suit-and-tie pics, too, such as Martin St-Louis with his Lady Byng Trophy (card #26 St-Louis), David Backes at the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft (card #42 Backes), and a sidelined Sidney Crosby at the Penguins Shirts Off Our Backs game (card #87 Crosby).
Pinnacle has even managed to slip in a few pics from the early part of the 2011-12 season, which means that José Théodore is featured with the Panthers (card #60 Théodore), Evgeni Nabokov is featured with the Islanders (card #144 Nabokov), Dany Heatley is featured with the Wild (card #215 Heatley), and all the Jets are featured in their new Winnipeg colours (as opposed to last year’s Atlanta gear).
Beyond the base set, you will find a handful of basic inserts, including one Rink Collection parallel featuring the metallic “Nufex” technology. The four “base” Ice Breakers rookies that you will find in your box will also feature the Nufex technology.
This year’s Pinnacle hockey is sold in eight-card hobby packs. Edmonton Oilers’ sophomore Taylor Hall is the pictured athlete on the box and wrapper packaging. To read more about this year’s set, please be sure to visit theWantList.ca’s 2011-12 Pinnacle hockey landing page.
