Collector’s Index: 4,961
Martin Brodeur has another record under his wings: the New Jersey Devils goaltender recorded his 104th career shutout, setting the new NHL mark. Brodeur surpassed the all-time record previously held by Terry Sawchuk. What’s left for the goaltender? Well, he is closing in on 5,000 items on his Collector’s Index, although he is still about 500 items back of retired legend Patrick Roy (5,422). Roy’s Index is the second biggest behind Wayne Gretzky, which puts Martin Brodeur third all time amongst all NHL players. As for Terry Sawchuk, well, there are just 612 items on the Sawchuk Index. This season, Sawchuk has been featured in 2009-10 Ultimate Memorabilia and 2009-10 Upper Deck Black.

THE OLYMPIAN: DAN BOYLE
Collector’s Index: 167
Drew Doughty may be the youngest Canadian Olympian on the men’s hockey team, but Dan Boyle has the smallest Collector’s Index of any of the 23 players named to the 2010 roster. The 20-year old Doughty actually has more items (308) than fellow defencemen Brent Seabrook (282), Duncan Keith (257) and Boyle (167). Boyle, 33, is a Stanley Cup champion and first-time Olympian. He has been featured on 33 collector items this season including O-Pee-Chee, Upper Deck and Panini. His NHL rookie cards were issued in 1999-2000.

THE FUTURE STAR: JORDAN EBERLE
Collector’s Index: 14
Jordan Eberle was Canada’s star at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship in Saskatoon, SK. Canada came an overtime goal short of extending its gold-medal run to six years, but not before Eberle scored a pair of third-period goals to push the game into the fourth period. Earlier tonight, Eberle’s game-used CHL Subway Series jersey sold for more than $800 U.S. in an auction hosted by The MeiGray Group. As for Eberle’s trading cards, he has eight cards featured in the new 2009-10 Ultimate Memorabilia brand produced by In The Game Trading Cards.

——–
THE LEGEND: BOBBY ORR
Collector’s Index: 958
Bobby Orr was on hand for the 2010 NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park on Jan. 1. Orr and Flyers’ legend Bobby Clarke dropped the puck in a ceremonial faceoff before the Bruins-Flyers outdoor match. Orr, considered one of the greatest players of all time, will next appear at the CHL Top Prospects Game in Windsor, ON on Jan. 20. Orr has now been selected as the cover subject for issue #4 of The Want List (you can view the cover image at www.theWantList.ca/subscribe/.

Collector’s Index: 4
Patrice Cormier was named Canada’s captain for the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championships this past week. Cormier and his Canadian teammates will participate in the annual junior championship from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. Cormier is one of six returning players from last year’s gold-medal winning team.
There are just four items listed on the Cormier Collector Index – three team-issued Extreme cards and a 2008-09 In The Game Heroes & Prospects card. If you are looking for a real collector’s treat, then be sure to bid on his CHL Subway Super Series game-worn jersey. His Québec League jersey is part of the first group of CHL jerseys for sale; all Québec League jerseys from the CHL Subway Super Series close on Tuesday Dec. 22 (9:38pm to be precise for the Cormier jersey!). The CHL Subway Super Series auction, which runs through Jan. 5, is presented by The MeiGray Group.

FIRST STAR: CRISTOBAL HUET
Collector’s Index: 450
Chicago Blackhawks’ goaltender Cristobal Huet is the National Hockey League’s first star of the week after posting back-to-back 3:0 shutouts over the St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. Huet, whose rookie cards were issued in 2002-03 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Kings, has already appeared in four hockey-card brands this 2009-10 season. His lone autograph card from the 2009-10 season is Upper Deck MVP One on One autographs which features Huet and Ty Conklin.

——–
THE ROOKIE: JOHN TAVARES
Collector’s Index: 359
John Tavares is off to a hot start with the New York Islanders this 2009-10 NHL season. He has 27 points in 36 games. He is also the toast of the hobby, with early rookie cards issued in 2009-10 Upper Deck Series One and 2009-10 Upper Deck MVP. His Upper Deck RC costs anywhere from $80-$120 while his Upper Deck MVP RC costs $35-$50. As for his game-used memorabilia, the Islanders have just released the first of three “Navy” game-worn jersey sets via nhl.islanders.com this past week.

——–
THE LEGEND: BRETT HULL
Collector’s Index: 2,906
Brett Hull had his jersey number retired this past week by the St. Louis Blues. Fans in attendance received a special Hull poster. So just how much does a Hull game-used jersey cost? Well, six years ago, a 1988 Calgary Flames Brett Hull jersey sold for $7,876 U.S. We expect that a St. Louis Blues gamer – perhaps from his 1990-91 Hart Trophy season – would sell for much more.
