The Saturday series will run 40 weeks from the start of October through to the end of June. The series will highlight stars from the 15 Montréal-Toronto playoff series: 1918, 1925, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1951, 1959, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1978 and 1979. For each vintage duo, we will feature five cool items listed in the 2012 Vintage Collector’s Almanac & Price Guide. Be sure to pick up your copy of the 2012 Vintage Collector’s Almanac & Price Guide at magazine stores (in Canada) or popular hockey collector stores.

1918 PLAYOFFS: TORONTO HC WINS THE NHL CHAMPIONSHIP

In the very first National Hockey League season, Toronto and Montréal met in a two-game series for the NHL Championship. Montréal had won the first portion of the regular season while Toronto had won the second portion. In the two-game playoff, the team that scored the most goals – Toronto won 10-7 – advanced to the Stanley Cup final. Toronto went on to defeat the Vancouver Millionaires in a best-of-five series for the Stanley Cup.

MONTRÉAL CANADIENS: GEORGES VÉZINA

Georges Vézina played goal for the Montréal Canadiens. A two-time Stanley Cup champion, he played for the Canadiens up until the 1925-26 season. He was honoured posthumously by induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 (the inaugural class). Today, the National Hockey League’s best goalie is awarded the Vézina Trophy.

THE RIVALRY: INDEX v INDEX

There are 190 items listed on the Georges Vézina Collector’s Index. The earliest item is the 1910-11 Prominent Canadian Hockey Players postcard (produced by Imperial Tobacco). This past 2010-11 season, Vézina was featured in Ultimate Memorabilia, Between the Pipes and In The Game Enshrined (three brands produced by In The Game).

Amazingly, there are only eight items listed on the Harry Holmes Collector’s Index. The earliest item is the 1925-27 Anonymous hockey card. The most recent item was issued as part of the 2010-11 In The Game Enshrined set.
