HEROES OF YEAR ONE

The Edmonton Oilers’ first season in the National Hockey League was 1979-80. Already in the team’s lineup that year were young legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Other stars were Blair MacDonald, Stan Weir, Brett Callighen and Dave Lumley. Young defenceman Kevin Lowe scored the team’s first NHL goal. Goalies included Eddie Mio, Jim Corsi and Dave Dryden.

HALL OF JERSEYS

Seven former Oilers have been honoured by the Hockey Hall of Fame, six of whom played on the high-octane team of the 1980s: #99 Wayne Gretzky, #17 Jari Kurri, #31 Grant Fuhr, #7 Paul Coffey, #11 Mark Messier and #9 Glenn Anderson. Also honoured are two players from the World Hockey Association days: Jacques Plante and Norm Ullman. Retired jerseys belong to Gretzky, Kurri, Fuhr, Coffey, Messier, Anderson and #3 Al Hamilton (also primarily from the Oilers’ WHA era).

GAME EDITION 2011-12

The Oilers boast a bevy young stars from recent drafts, most notably #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, #4 Taylor Hall, #91 Magnus Pääjärvi and #14 Jordan Eberle. Team captain is #10 Shawn Horcoff while alternate captains are #83 Ales Hemsky and #6 Ryan Whitney. The goaltending duo features #35 Nikolai Khabibulin and #40 Devan Dubnyk.
